Adirondack Baroque Consort
|
|
The Adirondack Baroque Consort was formed in 1962 by the late Dr.
Maurice C. Whitney, who was Director of Music for the Glens Falls City Schools.
It is one of the oldest early music performing groups in the United States.
Over the years, the group has performed throughout the northeastern United
States. Members of the consort are amateur and professional musicians from many
walks of life. Their goal is to make early music come alive.
The consort has an active schedule of concertizing and musical lectures at
historic houses, schools, colleges, senior residences and organizational
gatherings. The group also performs at weddings and special events where early
music is appropriate; sometimes they appear in costume. Programs include
medieval to modern music played on instruments such as recorders, krummhorns,
viols da gamba, Glastonbury pipes, keyboard and various percussion. The consort
is one of the oldest early music performing groups in the United States; it is
a registered not-for-profit educational organization; all the artists volunteer
their time and talent. Contributions to the Adirondack Baroque Consort are tax
deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
As part of their commitment to continuing education in the field of early
music, the group sponsors the William and Jane Coffey Scholarship through the
Hudson-Mohawk Chapter of the American Recorder Society. Bill and Jane are two
of the founding members of the group who have recently retired from active
playing. Proceeds from concerts and donations support the scholarship, and
purchases of instruments and music.
The ABC has played several concerts in the 2005-2006 season. In December 2005
they included St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, Clifton Park, The Bethlehem public
Library, First Night in Albany, and the Greens Show at the James Vanderpoel
House on Candlelight Night in Kinderhook. This winter and spring the group has
played at Kingsway Retirement Village, Schenectady, The Daughters of Sarah
Nursing Home, Albany, and at the opening reception for Metamorphoses at
Capitol Repertory Theater.
